Virginia Tech String Project is awarded a $20,000 grant from the County Music Association Foundation and was featured in the Roanoke Times. With the CMA Foundation grant, the program will be able to expand its reach into other parts of the region that lack orchestra programs in the public school curriculum. This award will also assist in providing need-based scholarships, extending the opportunity to participate to students who otherwise may not have the financial means to take part in the program. The University of South Carolina String Project, now in its 44thyear, has won national recognition, including the Verner Award and a documentary on South Carolina ETV celebrating the 20th anniversary of the program. When the University of South Carolina String Project was founded in 1974 there was just one small string program in the Columbia metropolitan area. Now all five school districts in the Columbia area have large and active string programs, with orchestras in every high school and six regional youth orchestras.
