Kimberly
Last year I was approached about the little sister of one of our long-time cello students. Kimberly was in kindergarten and had been watching her brother Lucky play cello, attending our concerts, and just really, really wanted to learn violin. We don’t usually take kids until 4th grade, with an occasional 3rd grader, so this was way too young for the program, but there was a decision-making complication: She had just been diagnosed with a virulent form of leukemia.

The next week Kimberly began violin. On the days she could attend, a teacher gave her an individual lesson in an adjacent room. Unfortunately, last year she could not continue for long, but that little bit of instruction last year helped her keep up with the older kids this year when she joined the regular String Project class. She plays a very good Twinkle, a few other pieces, is reading music and participates nicely in class.

7 year old Kimberly was named the 2009 “Make-a-Wish” poster child. She has had her wish granted and has met Cinderella. The Sacramento State String Project was invited to play at their Twilight Walk-a-Thon on May 17th, the evening before our regular semester concert at Sacramento State. Playing at the Walk-a-Thon was a wonderful way for the children, teachers and parents to show their support!
